Account registration

You can create a Yandex ID on the registration page, as well as on many other Yandex services and some official apps. One account is all you need to use all Yandex services.

  1. First and last name
  2. Username
  3. Password
  4. Phone number
  5. Alternate email address
  6. Security question

First and last name

During registration, we recommend entering your real name. If you have problems with access, if no other solutions help, our support team can check your information against your government-issued passport.

Username

Your username is a unique name for your Yandex account that you need to enter each time you log in. Your username defines your Yandex Mail address. If you choose the username john2009, your address will be john2009@yandex.com.

For usernames, Yandex ignores dots, hyphens, and capitalization, which means that a username like john.2009 is considered the same as john-2009 or John-2009. You can write your account name or email address however you like.

However, your username will be displayed in Yandex services with the same capitalization you used when registering. This can't be changed.

Restriction. A username can't start with a number and must not contain underscores _. You can't change your username after registration.

Password

Your password is the primary means of protecting your account. The password should meet these three main requirements:

  • You should be the only one who knows it
  • It should be easy to remember
  • It should be difficult to guess.
Attention. Don't tell anyone what the password you use to log in to your account is. The more people know your password, the higher the chance that a hacker will get their hands on it.

Don't use simple passwords: 12345, qwerty, password etc. Also do not use your first name, last name, birthday, or passport number as your password, because all of this information may be available to others.

For information on how to protect your password and account, read the Protect your account section.

Phone number

Linking a phone number to Yandex ID will give additional protection to your account, help to restore access to it if you forgot the password, and make interaction with many Yandex services more convenient.

To learn more, see Linking phone numbers.

Alternate email address

You can restore access to your account by using an alternate email address. If you forget your password, Yandex will send an email with instructions to the email address linked to your account.

If Yandex suspects that the password for logging in to the account with the main email address has been compromised, you won't be able to restore access using the alternate email address. It is more convenient and secure to reset your password using your mobile phone.

To learn how to link a new email address, see Alternate email addresses.

Security question

After registration, you can set a security question as as additional way of restoring access to your account.

It is more convenient and secure to reset your password using your mobile phone. However, if for any reason you have unlink it from your account, the security question will come in handy.

Since the security question allows you to change your password, you should be as careful about choosing a question and answer as you are about choosing your password. It isn't a good idea to enter a question that anyone other than you can answer. You should also avoid entering an answer that is too difficult or not true, because it will be easy to forget.

You can add or change your security question in the Security tab in the Recovery methods section. To set a new security question, enter the answer to the old one. Make sure that you are entering the correct answer using the appropriate keyboard layout.

If you can't remember the correct answer, you will be directed to Yandex support via a special form.
