Setting up mail clients

In addition to using the Yandex.Mail web interface, you can also work with your messages using various mail clients. To do so, you need to enable the POP3 or IMAP protocol in your mailbox settings. Follow these steps:

  1. Open the All settings menu:

  2. Choose Connect to email clients.
  3. Select the desired protocol.

  4. Save changes.

Setup for the IMAP protocol

When using the IMAP protocol, the mail client syncs with the server and saves the structure of folders in your mailbox. Messages that you send from the mail client will be saved both on your computer and on the server, and you can access them from various devices.

To set up a mail client for the IMAP protocol, you must specify the following:

Incoming mail
  • mail server address — imap.yandex.com;
  • connection security — SSL;
  • port — 993.
Outgoing mail
  • mail server address — smtp.yandex.com;
  • connection security — SSL;
  • port — 465.

To access the mail server, enter your Yandex username and password. If you are setting it up to get mail from a “login@yandex.com”, type of mailbox, your username is the part of the address before the “@” sign.

Attention! We do not recommend using your provider's mail server for sending mail from your name on Yandex.

IMAP support will be enabled automatically the first time you log in to the mail program.

Setup for the POP3 protocol

When using the POP3 protocol, all messages from the folders that you select in the All settingsConnect to email clients menu will be saved by the mail client on your computer in the Inbox folder. If necessary, you can set up filters in the mail client to automatically move messages to the desired folders. Messages you send will be only be saved on your computer.

Note. Many mail clients have a default setting to delete messages from the server when they are downloaded. In this case, all the messages in your mailbox will be moved to the Deleted folder, and will be permanently deleted from there after 31 days. To save messages in your mailbox, change the settings in the mail client you are using to save copies of messages on the server when downloading them.

To set up a mail client for the POP3 protocol, you must specify the following:

Incoming mail
  • mail server address — pop.yandex.com;
  • connection security — SSL;
  • port — 995.
Outgoing mail
  • mail server address — smtp.yandex.com;
  • connection security — SSL;

You can set up getting messages over POP3 from any folder, including Spam. To do this, open the menu All settingsConnect to email clients and select the desired folders.

When downloading folder contents using mail clients, messages are not marked as read, by default. If you want to mark the received messages as read, turn on the corresponding option.
